Samsung Unveils GDDR7 DRAM for Enhanced Graphics Performance

Samsung Unveils GDDR7 DRAM for Enhanced Graphics Performance: Samsung Unveils Groundbreaking 32Gbps GDDR7 DRAM, Paving the Way for AI, HPC, and Automotive Advancements

In a significant leap forward for semiconductor technology, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in the industry, has developed the world’s first Graphics Double Data Rate 7 (GDDR7) DRAM.

This cutting-edge memory solution promises to revolutionize various sectors, including AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and automotive vehicles.

Samsung Unveils GDDR7 DRAM for Enhanced Graphics Performance

Compared to its predecessor, the 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM, the new GDDR7 offers a remarkable 1.4 times performance boost and a 20% increase in power efficiency.

The 16-gigabit (Gb) GDDR7 product sets a new speed record, boasting an astounding 32Gbps speed per pin. This translates to an astonishing bandwidth of 1.5 terabytes per second (TBps), surpassing GDDR6’s 1.1TBps.

The groundbreaking improvements in speed and efficiency are made possible by Samsung’s adoption of the Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signalling technique, replacing the older Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) signalling technique. PAM3 enables 50% more data to be transmitted in a single signalling cycle, propelling data-intensive tasks to new heights.

The GDDR7 DRAM’s versatility and performance capabilities are expected to significantly enhance user experiences in areas such as workstations, PCs, game consoles, and more.

Additionally, Samsung anticipates the technology to find its way into future applications, including AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and automotive vehicles.

Samsung’s commitment to energy efficiency is evident in the new GDDR7 design. It showcases a 20% improvement in energy efficiency compared to GDDR6, attributed to power-saving design technology that caters to high-speed operations.

Furthermore, Samsung offers a low-operating voltage option, catering to power-conscious devices like laptops.

To ensure reliable performance during high-speed operations, Samsung has optimized the IC architecture and employed an epoxy moulding compound (EMC) with high thermal conductivity for the packaging material.

These enhancements contribute to a significant 70% reduction in heat resistance compared to GDDR6, ensuring stable product performance even under demanding conditions.

The market’s anticipation for Samsung’s GDDR7 DRAM is evident, and the company aims to maintain its position as a technological leader by continually evolving and releasing next-generation graphics DRAM solutions to meet evolving market demands.

With its impressive performance and power efficiency, the GDDR7 DRAM ushers in a new era of possibilities for cutting-edge applications across various industries.
